“Shout joyful praises to God…Tell the world how glorious he is…Come and see what our God has done, what awesome miracles he performs for people…You have tested us, O God; you have purified us like silver…Come and listen, all you who fear God, and I will tell you what he did for me.” – Psalm 66:1,2,5,10, 16 (NLT)

The 2020 Special Missions Contribution is now history. And I want to commend you. I have been a part of missions contributions for more than 35 years, and I have never seen one as heart moving as this one. Starting with a goal of $250,000 in the middle of a pandemic, the final amount is more than $366,000!!! That is 46% over the target. I am reminded of what Paul wrote about the Macedonian churches in 2 Corinthians 8:2-3 (NIV): “In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability.” Phoenix Church, I love you for your sacrifice, and for many other reasons.

As I write this, it is less than forty days until we elect the next President of the United States. Never have I seen so many strong negative emotions in a presidential election. Both sides attack character, truthfulness, fairness, and any other Christian characteristic that you might list. My prayer is that God selects the next president. But my prayer is also that each of us as disciples of Jesus will guard our mouths, social media posts, and hearts from the ungodly attitudes that are all around us every day.

Let me remind you of a few commands from God that should help us all in this hostile political climate:

  • “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”                  – Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)
  • “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”  – John 13:34 (NIV)
  • “The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”          – Proverbs 12:18 (NIV)
  • “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” – Ephesians 4:31-32 (NIV)

Until next week, stay thankful, stay calm, walk with God, and encourage one another,

Al Baird for the Leadership Team
